What We Do

The Piscataqua Region Environmental Planning Assessment, or PREPA, identifies opportunities for water quality and natural resource protections in our entire watershed, organized by municipality. It includes both regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to resources management. The assessment is organized by municipality and covers 52 cities and towns in the Piscataqua Region watershed. The most recent PREPA was released in 2026 with the support from and partnership with:

• Southern Maine Planning & Development Commission
• Rockingham Planning Commission
• Strafford Regional Planning Commission
• Southern New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission

By looking up the data for a specific city or town, community members can use that analysis as inspiration for a PREPA Grant proposal. The PREPA Grant Program helps our communities make big strides in protecting their natural resources and water quality, as well as in preparing for and adapting to recurring extreme weather.

Currently, PREP offers two grant programs:

• The Piscataqua Region Environmental Planning Assessment Grant Program—also known as the PREPA Grant Program. PREPA Grants support any of the 52 cities and towns within the Piscataqua Region Watershed in both Maine and New Hampshire. The program helps our communities make big strides in protecting their natural resources and water quality, as well as in preparing for and adapting to recurring extreme weather.
• Climate Impact Grants provide up to $25,000 for community-led projects that address the impacts of extreme heat and/or flooding in the Piscataqua Region Watershed. Projects must emphasize local action and strong community engagement to build climate resilience where it’s needed most.

The NH Coastal Adaptation Workgroup (NHCAW) is a collaboration of organizations working to ensure coastal watershed communities are resourceful, ready, and resilient to the impacts of extreme weather and rising sea levels. Two of PREP staff as NHCAW members.

The Natural Resource Outreach Coalition (NROC) is a group of local organizations, academics, agencies, and nonprofits working collaboratively to advance protections for water quality in New Hampshire. Two of PREP staff collaborate frequently with NROC.
