A Case for Restoration and Recovery of Zostera marina L. in the Great Bay Estuary

University of New Hampshire, PREP, Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, NH Department of Environmental Services, and the Conservation Law Foundation

Eelgrass is a cornerstone species of healthy estuaries, providing habitat for fish and shellfish, and producing significant amounts of organic matter for the larger food web. Eelgrass beds in the Great Bay Estuary have suffered over 50% loss of acreage and a significant decline in density. This white paper - developed by local scientists and managers from the University of New Hampshire, PREP, the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, NH Department of Environmental Services, and the Conservation Law Foundation - describes the state of eelgrass science in the Great Bay Estuary and is meant to inform future restoration efforts and potential long-term recovery of eelgrass.
